Keep your eyes peeled for the blue monkeys swinging through the trees!
Hiking time: 7 – 8 hours
Distance: 16km/10mi
Habitat: Montane Forest
We continue on the trail leading out of the rainforest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 Camp. Here we catch our first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.

Today, we will spend the full day exploring the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. It is a gentle walk east on moorland meadows towards Shira 2 Camp. We then divert from the main trail to Barranco camp.
Distance: 5km/3mi
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert
This is the best acclimatization day on this route as climbers trek high from 4206m to about 4629 m above sea level and sleep low at Barranco Camp which is 3960 m above sea level.
A walking pace with an altitude change on this day will be the best determination and good exercise for the summiting day.
Distance: 4km/2mi
Hiking time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Early in the morning leaving Karanga camp,we continue with our trekking through the rock ridges till we connect our trail with the Mweka trail. We proceed trekking to Barafu camp where we will have lunch and enjoy an early dinner and have time to prepare for the summit day.
Distance: 5km/3mi | 5km/3mi up / 13km/8mi down
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours up / 5-6 hours down
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Wake up early at midnight around 00:00hrs,, we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At this elevation and time of day, the wind and cold can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent but short breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak.
Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Here, you can take a moment to reflect on your tremendous accomplishment. You’ll obviously have the opportunity to take a few pictures from the ‘Rooftop of Africa’ to memorialize this special moment. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
Distance: 10km/6mi
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Forest
Today marks the end of our trek, as we will be making the last descent to exit the park. At mweka gate we will be met with our hosts and driver ready waiting to pick us back to the hotel in Arusha. Relux and perhaps keep enjoying and refreshing with Kilimanjaro Beer, When waiting to receive your Kilimanjaro Summit certificate.

Kate BVerified So good we want to come back again ASAP for another safari area and will definitely book with Experience Safaris. Our recent 10 day Safari truly answered any “bucket list” desires we had about experiencing Wild Africa. Reggie was with us constantly for 10 days and we came to love him in a whole new way: as a guide/protector/friend/son. He knows all the areas we visited so well that it seemed as if he put in an order for a certain animal to appear sometimes as we rounded a corner or gently drove up to a remote area that just looked like dry bush grass but lo and behold the lion cubs! We had a few unexpected adventures such as vehicle troubles, but Reggie calmly and systematically handled those issues like a true professional. With so much time together we were able to talk about just about everything from cultural differences to animal habitat. He is vastly knowledgeable about so many aspects of nature, well beyond what one might expect from a typical “let’s just see what we can find today” approach. We are so glad to have committed to the 10 day safari instead of the rush a shorter one would have been. Reggie adapted everything to our pace, which we greatly appreciated. He is a man of grace, integrity, humour and great kindness- he has the servant’s heart and no request was any problem to him. Hakuna matata was our motto. If we were to recommend one change to our long safari it would be to fly the long distances with our guide, which they can arrange. We cannot recommend Experience Safaris highly enough. Rob BlickleVerified Exceeded our bucket list expectations After a 10 day safari, I'm Reggie's biggest fan. His enthusiastic spirit is as big as the great outdoors. With his capable hands on the safari jeep's wheel, every day was truly the adventure of a lifetime. You couldn't ask for anything more on a wildlife tour in the most exciting location on the planet. I was in awe of his broad knowledge of Tanzania's flora and fauna. His deep love and respect for the people and animals of his home country is a pure pleasure to experience. Discover the heart of Africa with this dependable and enjoyable young man. Aida ZVerified Wonderful! Unforgettable ! We had a wonderful experience with Experience Safaris on a 5-day Safari in Tarangire, Ngorongoro, SerengetiEverything was perfectly organized from the begginning. The whole team took great care of us and we had a very good and experienced guide and driver. We almost saw the big five ! (No rhino but maybe was not the better Time of the year to see them).
